Ten tips to improve your memory even when you are old

It starts very slowly. One day you do not remember a name, a date or where the scissors went. Those episodes tend to repeat as time goes by. Then you begin to worry and tie a cord to your index finger.

But there are ways to delay and even reverse those episodes of memory loss associated with aging. An organ called the cerebral hippocampus, is capable of producing new cells, even in very old persons. For that, you have to make an effort too.

These are 10 things you can do to help with your memory:

  1. Eat a balanced diet of foods rich in omega-3 like fish.
  2. Exercise regularly. Did you know that at least a half-hour walk can do you a lot of good to your overall health?
  3. Check and maintain healthy blood pressure.
  4. Make sure to get enough sleep. Adults need between 7.5 to 9 hours of sleep each day.
  5. Exercise the brain. Read, do puzzles, learn languages, listen to classical music.
  6. Put aside multitasking and concentrate on just one task.
  7. Socialize with friends, colleagues, and neighbors. Go for a walk and have fun with friends and family.
  8. Avoid unnecessary tensions and stress. Learn to laugh and forgive.
  9. If you want to try nutritional supplements, these are some you can take to help your memory: vitamins B6, B12, C and E; calcium, and zinc.
  10. Finally, do not be afraid to use a notebook and stick reminders in the refrigerator doors, because at some point we all need them.
